The extended civil war in Angola (1975-2002) devastated the country's economy, left vital infrastructure in ruins and the civilian population dependent on humanitarian aid. the conflict also resulted in huge displacements of population and the separation of families both within the country and across international borders.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization. Its exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect and assist victims of armed conflicts and internal disturbances. The ICRC's activities include visiting prisoners of war and security detainees, searching for missing persons, transmitting messages between separated family members, reuniting dispersed families, providing safe water, food and medical assistance to those in need and promoting respect for international humanitarian law.

The ICRC has been present in Angola since 1975.
